LEAVE THE GUNS, KEEP THE CANNOLIS: RICKY POWELL

The legendary street photographer Ricky Powell has been a close friend of FRANK151 for many years. Our favorite funky uncle was the curator of Chapter 43: Bug Out! and even though that was three years ago, downtown New York’s number one Bummy Sophisticate still comes by the FRANK office nearly every other day to
chop it up and share an invisible cigarette or two.

We’re proud to have wrangled Ricky into doing something for us on the regular, and what follows is his first column for us, Leave The Guns, Keep The Cannolis.
Take it away Ricky…

Hi there. It’s good to have a regular gig again—it’s only been 20 years. It’s a privilege to show my pictures on an official website. Somebody appreciates me. Thank goodness. So…let’s hope this is the beginning of an ongoing discreet encounter.

For anyone who asks, “are you shooting?” Yes, dum-dum. The following is a case in point:

Dang, that’s a big ass poodle.

Kimmy Matulova (my Faye Dunaway of hip-hip) recently at a Knicks game, schooling her on Willis Reed/Mr. Knick, famous moment game seven, 1970 NBA finals.

My homegirl Stella from Nemes on Broadway.

My kool mailman, Darryl…he’s part of the Hollis crew.
Nice little dynamic duo I met at the Fountain Art Fair.

Self-portrait. Waverly Diner, 3 a.m.

More from FRANK:

Chapter 43: Bug Out – Andre Torres Interview

Chapter 43: Bug Out!

Chess hustler. Union Square Park.

Muddy Waters, Mick Jagger, and Buddy Guy crooning “Hoochie Coochie Man.” Practicing my concert photography off the TV whilst smoking a joint of Turkish tobacco.

Staring contest. Hudson St.

DJ/artist Miranda Maxwell at listening party for her latest mixtape at Cardinal restaurant.

Bitches dig me.

Homecorn always on the lookout.
